account policy

You can get an account if I know you and like you, and you're not a resource hog. If you think you qualify, ask.

I support IMAP over SSL. Configure your mail client to use hostname mail.qnan.org and port 993 (default for SSL/TLS). To avoid self-signed certificate warnings, consider importing my Certificate Authority into your certificate store.

You may receive messages that are up to 30 MB each.

After we part our ways and I stop providing your account, I will enable a (semi-)permanent relocation notification that will appear in bounce messages for mail destined to your old address. The bounce message can list your new email address or some other method of reaching you.

client configuration

I've written detailed directions for configuring Mozilla Thunderbird to use my server both for IMAPS and SMTP relaying.

If you're lucky enough to run a UNIX system, it is relatively trivial to configure Postfix for a null client configuration and TLS client configuration, after which you can use any mail client you want without any trouble. However, this is not for the faint of heart.

spam filtering

The following anti-SPAM technologies are in place:

• Spamhaus' XBL/SBL (serverwide)
• Greylisting for 60 seconds, serverwide.
• DomainKeys verification to add a header. This is serverwide and does not reject mail.
• SpamAssassin to add headers. This is serverwide and does not reject mail.
• Several Postfix settings that reject malformed messages. (serverwide)

Serverwide technologies are by default active for every user of this mailserver. To opt out, just ask me.

For the benefit of the Internet community at large, the following outbound technologies are in place:

• Sender Policy Framework with requested enforcement by other hosts
• DomainKeys signing with requested enforcement by other hosts

I am committed to staying on top of the spam problem by implementing the latest and most effective methodologies.

relaying

You may relay through my mail server if:

1. I know you and like you
2. you're not a resource hog
3. you promise not to use this ability to negatively impact others
4. you know, or are willing to learn, how to set up your end to present a TLS certificate to my mailserver. This may be painful.

distribution lists

This server has the capability to maintain distribution lists. For more information, please go to http://list.qnan.org.
